Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls! Pull up a chair and enjoy the show! Today is earth day 2008 and it's a one show gig only. No repeats, no extentions. One day. Earth Day!

But what precisely is it? Let's find out! Wikipedia lables Earth Day as "...is a name used for two different observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment."

For those of you out there with a less than firm grip on geography: We as South Africans are in the Southern Hemisphere, making our version of being made aware of our planet's environment the autumn version. Personally I would have prefered the spring edition, but hey, I suppose we can't choose everything!

So to all of you out there, tree huggers or not, happy Earth Day, and may mother earth bless your autumn with pretty brown leaves and joyfull times cuddling on cold Sunday mornings!

I think it would be great if, just for today, we could perhaps do at least one of the following:

  • Turn off those lights when you don't need them anymore
  • Instead of driving the two blocks for your smokes, walk
  • Not buy your smokes at all!
  • Clean up the rubbish in front of your home, at least
  • Recycle something, anything
  • Use water responsibly (I know it's the power we don't have, but water might be next!)
  • Buy something that's organic / recycled / nature friendly

I by no means will manage all of the above, perhaps not even a few, but I certainly will try,  which as good a start as anything!
