Aside from painters and poets, we still have other artists of different fields. So can we consider reconstructive surgeon as an artist?

The answer to this question is a clear “YES”. Reconstructive surgeon or plastic surgeon is a person who has a specialization in reconstructing or restoring the original form of a deformed body parts as well as bringing back its normal functions. Examples of body deformities that reconstructive surgeon works on are cleft lips, cleft palates, webbed hands or feet, burn scars, and tumors. But how can a reconstructive surgeon be an artist? Their skills in correcting body deformities are evidences that will prove that they are also artist in their own way. Their hands are their tools in bringing out beauty to everyone. Every stroke of their hands means a new light of hope to their patients.

Prospect of Cure for Herpes

New research being done in Canada has offered hope to the millions of people around the world living with the Herpes virus. Scientists supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Washington and Pennsylvania State Universities have identified a cellular process that seeks and then fights the Type 1 strain of the virus, offering the possibility that a cure for this infection and potentially other illnesses like cancer and HIV may be on the horizon.

A five-year period of research has discovered how a cell infected with herpes can be forced to show the immune system the virus is present – essentially ‘unmasking’ it – and therefore send out a prompt for it to be fought and destroyed. Herpes is currently incurable because it is able to hide from and so block our immune system’s protection, allowing it to return.

The discovery was made when the scientists were conducting tests on the cells of mice that were infected with HSV-1. They put the cells in environments, replicating those that the virus responds well to, namely when the body is experiencing a low-grade fever.

It is estimated that up to 10% of the sexually active population is infected with genital herpes, while 70% are infected with herpes in the mouth area, usually referred to as coldsores when the virus produces symptoms. The virus goes through dormant and active phases; when dormant it while be symptomless and non-transferable, but when active sufferers experience blisters and weeping sores in the mouth or genital area and sometimes present with flu-like symptoms. At the moment there is no cure, though there are medications that can make attacks less painful. Ultimately though patients just have to refrain from physical contact when suffering from an attack – it is passed on through touch, making it a sexually transmitted infection - and learn to manage their condition.

So traumatic have some found this that they have shied away from entering relationships with those who are uninfected, for fear of passing the herpes on. Dating websites have been springing up on the internet, which not only allow herpes sufferers to get together but also provide a forum to share their experiences. The websites give a strong sense that while the diagnosis is not the end of the world, it can be extremely isolating and sufferers often feel stigmatised and embarrassed by their status.

It can also be difficult to get a definitive diagnosis of infection, as a herpes test can only be done when someone is experiencing an attack. Testing for herpes usually involves a doctor taking a swab from a blister, but can also be done with a urine test. This has lead to some private online clinics offering home herpes tests for a fee, an option many appreciate due to the anonymity and convenience. Blood tests will show antibodies if the body has come into contact with the virus at some point.

Now that a cure for herpes is a genuine possibility, the team of scientists say their next step is to examine how the mechanism that activates immune responses to the herpes virus can be used to prompt a similar response when other diseases are present. Dr Michel Desjardins from the University of Montreal believes that their research may lead to treatments being developed within ten years. “Scientists are one step closer to creating new treatments that can activate the defence against this and other viruses” he said. “While it may not be possible to completely eradicate Type 1 herpes simplex in people who are already infected, at the very least, future therapies may be able to keep the virus in its dormant state."
